Mothers choose a type of diaper for various reasons including cleanliness, health, convenience and cost. There are more types of cloth nappies available now, more than ever. Some require no other pieces while some require covers or inserts. Here’s a look at a few types.

## All in Ones or All in Twos

An *All in One* is generally a nappy that does not require anything else. Functionally it’s similar to a disposable. The soaker is sewn in as part of the nappy and the whole thing can close with snaps or Velcro.

An *All in Two* works perfectly, same as the first one, only the soaker is detachable. This is useful because when your baby pees, you can actually take out the soaker then replace it with a fresh one.

## Understanding the Pocket

A pocket styled nappy usually does not require any cover as it is created with a polyurethane laminate or very close type of material. The material on the inside is made of microfleece, velour, cotton or bamboo. The choice of material will determine the dryness of a baby. Nappies like this are usually sewn with an opening for insertion of materials that are good for absorption like microfiber or hemp.

## What a Fitted Nappy Means

This nappy is simply cotton, hemp, fleece, etc which is sewn together but does not have a waterproof layer. It will require a cover layer. Without the cover, baby’s pee will soak through to furniture or your lap. With these it’s important to make sure to check them often to prevent leaks.

## Prefold Style Nappies

Prefolds are those plain rectangular cloths that are folded into 3 areas. There are 4 layers of material on the outside and 6 or 8 layers on the inside. The fabrics that are commonly used are again cotton, hemp, bamboo, and etc. These nappies are awesome for pocket stuffing and extra absorbency when necessary.

It is always good to search for bulk nappies. Given that nappies will be needed throughout your baby’s early years, getting nappies in bulk will cut down on a lot of costs. Getting them in bulk may require you to pay more up front, but it will be worth every penny especially if you have many kids or if you have your friend’s babies over for a visit. There are many cloth nappies companies in Australia but you might want to give one a try before purchasing them in bulk so you won’t be disappointed should the quality not meet your expectations.
